nine bales of midsouth cotton were subjected to three harvesting treatments, three levels of lint cleaning, three levels of mill opening line cleaning, and two levels of mill carding. fiber properties after ginning were best for the normal-harvested cotton without lint cleaning, but producer returns were best for normal-harvested cotton cleaned by two lint cleaners. after the cotton was cleaned at the mill, the best fiber properties shifted from the normal-harvested cotton to the early harvested cotton. fiber properties after mill cleaning were best for early harvested cotton ginned with one lint cleaner, cleaned at the mill opening line with a hopper, superior cleaner, superior cleaner and picker, and carded twice.
