cottons contaminated with grass and control cottons were processed into yarn. these cottons were carded with and without the use of crush rolls. the grass was not pulverized by the crush rolls as other foreign matter often is. the grass tends to fibrillate and behave as coarse fibers. these "grass" fibers appear to interfere with the drafting process and the ring travelers during yarn formation resulting in increased end breaks. they are also thought to obstruct the intimate association between fibers in the yarn thus lowering the strength of contaminated yarns.
