a brief review of production and consumption data of cotton fibers in the last few years is followed by an assessment of existing spinning techniques and equipment available on the market. a typical characteristic of the development trend in spinning machinery is its diversification, which seems to have put the ring-spinning technique on the defensive. in the coarse-yarn sector, the rotor spinners are expected to consolidate their position still further, where full automation is essential, including the self-starting operation at rotor speeds above 70,000rpm. it is suggested in conclusion that a significant portion of future development activities of the textile machinery builders will have to be aimed at solutions to the transportation and materials handling problems
