this article deals with the dust problem in cotton spinning that has been getting more acute over the last 10 years or so. above all the first process stages - opening and carding the cotton in the spinning mill - are crucial to the downstream processing of this fibre. the associated dusts in various grain sizes are detrimental not only to the productive operations but also to the the health of human beings employed in these. starting with definitions of total dust and fine dust, and the metrology of textile dust at the workplace, the mathematical relations between dedusting and dust concentration are enlarged upon, together with their injuriousness to health, present international legislation and the resulting technical demands for effecting improvements. 5 refs
