the problems in sampling cotton dust in air-cleaner systems and in work areas are elucidated, and solutions are suggested. devices for separating the fine dust and fine lint fractions to obtain a true $left double quote$ dust $right double quote$ sample are described data that indicate the fine lint content of samples from card room air and card waste ducts are included. the paper indicates that area samples drawn from still air cannot measure the dust concentration in the undisturbed air when fine lint is present. ways to separate lint and dust fractions and thereby obtain two-part area samples are presented. mass-concentration and size-distribution analyses with electronic instruments are discussed, with emphasis on problems specific to cotton dust. 21 refs
