the existing oil milling plants were visited to collect information on plant performance. in addition to direct measurements, plant records were consulted and discussions held with the managerial and technical staff to obtain the required information on oil recovery and energy requirements. the average recovery of oil in mechanical extraction was 73 except in the case of cotton seed for which it was only 60. solvent extraction, however, offers the maximum scope for enhancing oil recovery to almost 100. the energy requirement of solvent extraction was greater than the mechanical extraction. means and ways are suggested to improve oil recovery and energy requirements.
