Cotton that is classified as rough preparation, or Prep, contains curled or napped lumps and results from wet harvesting, gleaning, other unusual handling conditions, or poor ginning. Historically, cotton designated Prep has low market value. To determine whether cottons classified for rough or abnormal preparation process differently than do equivalent cottons with a smoother appearance, researchers conducted laboratory spinning experiments using cottons from two crop years and three growing asreas. Results showed little or no significant differences in the quality of yarns made from cottons with rough preparation and those made from cottons with equivalent fiber properties and normal preparation. Manufacturing waste, however, was significantly higher. 2 refs.
