Cost control of stored consumable materials is an important factor in optimizing total spinning mill costs. Yarn quality depends on the timely replacement of such consumable stores as cots, aprons, spindle tapes, and metallic wires. A study of stores consumption in 120 Indian textile mills showed that high productivity mills tended to replace consumable items more frequently than did lower productivity mills. The high productivity mills replaced top and bottom aprons together and all synthetic tapes on the same schedule. The study suggested that mills using high volumes of stored items could reduce consumption without sacrificing quality. Consumption of stores much below industry noms may result in decreased production of lower quality yarns. 1 ref.
