Because of the potential for damage to the product, mill engineers must carefully consider the design of yarn storage, handling, and transportation systems in yarn manufacturing plants. Assessment of materials handling problems at spinning mills involves a comparison of the yarn from the top and bottom of existing sliver cans and an examination of the effect of various types of springs and casters used in a sliver can assembly. Minimizing yarn storage problems requires minimizing yarn takeup, filling the sliver can without interruption or other complication, protecting the stored material, and simplifying transportation. Tests indicated that bottom materials tend to deteriorate significantly in sliver cans without castors and that bottom materials properties deteriorate more in cans with short castors than in cans with longer castors.
