A study examined the rigidity of commonly used polyester/viscose yarns and the influence of heat treatment on blended yarn properties. Heat treatment caused significant decreases in the flexural rigidity of MJS yarns. Yarns with higher linear density or higher polyester content and yarns manufactured at lower speeds experienced greater decreases in rigidity due to heat treatment. Tenacity losses resulting from heat treatment were 6-12 percent for MJS yarns and 7-14.4 percent for ring spun yarns. Tenacity losses were higher for coarse yarns and yarns wityh higher polyester content. Heat treatment increased breaking extension and yarn diameter for MJS and ring spun yarns. Ring spun yarns had slightly higher residual shrinkage than MJS yarns and shrinkage increased with increases in polyester content or yarn linear density. 12 refs.
