Compared with other cellulosic fibers, the manufacture of lyocell fibers offers reduced energy consumption and a higher level of environmental safety. Optimizing lyocell fiber properties and processing machines decreases problems associated with spinning lyocell fibers. After opening the flocks, the fibers must be mixed and fed to carding machines. Carding speed can exceed 50 grams per hour. High speed autoleveling drawing machines help prepare the fibers for high speed rotor or ring spinning. Manufacturing costs for ring spun yarns of Ne 30 and Nm 50 are 24 percent lower for lyocell yarns than for cotton yarn. The use of lyocell reduces energy costs by 16 percent compared with cotton for this type of ring spun yarn manufacturing. Because of cotton's cleaning requirements, manufacturing 1 kilogram of this yarn count from cotton fibers requires 25 percent more raw material than the same count yarn made from lyocell fibers.
