Researchers investigated how such spinning variables as strand spacing, twist level, and spindle speed affect spinning geometry; the effect of variations in strand spacing and twist factor on the tenacity, hairiness, and abrasion resistance of cotton Sirospun yarn; and the trapped strand twist. Increasing the strand spacing from 3 millimeters to 11 millimeters increased the tenacity of 36.9 tex Sirospun yarn because the trapped strand twist increased slightly. The tenacity of 28.1 tex and 18.5 tex Sirospun yarns was greatest at a strand spacing of 9 millimeters. An increase in strand spacing gradually reduced yarn hairiness and increased abrasion resistance. When the twist multiplier increased, yarn tenacity increased to a maximum and then decreased. Higher twists, longer fibers, reduced strand spacing, more even strands, or lower yarn tension improved the spinning performance of Sirospun cotton yarns. 20 refs.
