Pineapple leaf fibers were spun in a cotton spinning system with minor modifications. The raw material was first decorticated and chemically degummed. Prior to carding on SITRA's Lap Convertor, the fibers were opened in two passes through a Shirley opener. Because the absence of interfiber cohesion prevented the formation of card web, a web condenser was attached to the Lap Convertor. Modifications to some of the cotton system machinery were requisite. Three-zone drafting was converted to single zone drafting by removing the second and third top rollers of the 4/4 drafting system. Yarn counts in the range of 6s to 7s were achieved. The yarns can be used in carpets, home furnishings, and industrial fabrics.
