The American Textile Manufacturers Institute will develop the voluntary data communications standard for spinning in accordance with American National Standard Institute guidelines for an American National Standard. The Data Communications Task Force, after identifying the requirements of the spinning process and reviewing existing regulations, recommended the use of the Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) standard as the basis for development of the voluntary data standard because the MMS is applicable to a wide variety of devices and applications, including the manufacturing cell, shop control, assembly cell control, process control, building automation, remote control of energy distribution networks, configuration of field bus nodes, and intercontrol center communications. Widely implemented by industry device manufacturers, MMS contributes to costs savings via interoperability, independence, and data access. 7 refs.
