An overview of the performance of Indian spinning mills in 1997-1998 highlights yarn selling prices and mixing costs, net output and sale values, salaries, wages, productivity, power and conversion costs, and yarn quality. Substantial increases in cotton costs, salaries, wages, and power diminished the net earnings of most spinning mills. Yarn selling proces increased 2.5-6 percent between the first qaurter of 1997 and the first quarter of 1998. The cost of salaries and wages, the most important factor governing the profitability of a spinning mill, increased 12 percent.
