Data Requirements for Staple Spinning Frames (Results of a Survey of U.S. Spinners)

A survey of United States yarn spinning companies investigated the current and future use of electronic data collection and transfer systems. Results indicated that companies were primarily concerned with data that were associated with productivity and efficiency. Of the 85 companies surveyed, 39 utilized data on spinning machine efficiency, although the number rose to 58 when the question included those companies planning to add that capacity in the near future. Only eight respondents utilized data on quality and only three more companies planned to add capacity in the future. Currently, off-line quality data collection remains a more economical alternative to online quality data collection. 3 refs.
