The development of high speed drafting systems is traced from the 19th century to the present.
Factors that favored the development of high speed drafting after 1945 are outlined. The development of high speed drafting systems for drawing-frame sliver spinning during the 1950s is reviewed. The reasons for the ultimate failure of this technology are discussed. The development of air-jet, wrap, and friction spinning systems during the last 20 years is described. Problems associated with these newer spinning technologies are discussed. The future of high speed drafting and drive systems is predicted. 7 refs.
