The design of an ideal draw-frame involves such factors as friction, load, adhesion, fiber mass and orientation, and drafting force. Fiber control is basically achieved through the type, diameter, and arrangement of the rollers and the load on the roller. Roller setting is critical to optimal drafting in which the fibers pass through the nips without slipping. Short fibers require close setting; long fibers, such as manmade fibers, require wider setting. Designs from various companies, such as Platt Sapo-Lowell, Rieter, and Zinser, that were developed to solve these problems are described. refs.
