Spinning machinery exhibited at the 1991 ITMA is reviewed. The recession has affected this sector. Because growth is down, companies have not invested in research and development to the extent required for new technologies. However, some important trends were in evidence at the exhibit. Automation has resulted in high productivity, particularly in combed yarn spinning, but at the expense of flexibility. Ring spinning machines capable of producing fine, high-quality yarns directly from the sliver are worthy of note. Machines and equipment for short-staple spinning (blowroom, carding, combing, drawing, speed frames, and ring spinning frames) are reviewed.
