The limitations of ring, rotor, friction, and air jet spinning are discussed. In ring spinning, the relationship between yarn count and spindle speed suggests that speeds and productivity will only increase for finer count yarns. Conversely, rotor and friction spinning show greater productivity with shorter count yarns. Speeds have improved for ring spinning with the advent of automatic doffing, increased spindlage, automatic piecing, and automatic splicing. In India, spindle speeds of 20,000 rpm have been used. Although high speeds require greater power consumption, the productivity achieved makes the speed cost-effective. 12 refs.
