The Advanced Fiber Information System (AFIS) enables researchers to measure different cotton fiber parameters at successive stages of processing. Researchers used AFIS to determine fiber maturity ratio (MR), immature fiber content (IFC), fiber fineness, and their distributions at bale laydown and at different processing stages, beginning with the scutching lap and ending by processing the fibers on combed or carded spinning systems. Results revealed an increase in mean fiber linear density of 10 percent for the combed spinning system and 5-6 percent for the carded spinning system. Processing increased MR and decreased IFC. Slight changes in mean maturity and IFC confirmed the importance of selecting raw materials with the appropriate maturity because technological processes do not ensure significant removal of immature fibers. 5 refs.
