The National Jute Development Program in India developed a variety of new processing technologies and new jute products. The program improved methods of blending jute with cotton, viscose, acrylic, polyester, polypropylene, and other fibers. The Indian Jute Industrial Research Association developed a fungal enzyme softening treatment that upgrades low grade mesta and jute fibers to textile grades and increases the processability of textile grade TD3 jute so that ring spinning speeds of 8,000 rpm become possible. The South Indian Textile Research Association and Ahmedabed Textile Industry Research Association manufactured fine jute blend yarns in blends of up to 40 percent jute with cotton, rayon, acrylic, polyester, and polypropylene using both ring and rotor spinning machines. Other developments improved air jet spinning, woolenization, and friction spinning of jute fibers. 4 refs.
