Cotton waste generated during preyarn processing can by collected and recycled as part of a new yarn blend. Studies determined that having up to 5 percent of recycled fibers in a yarn blend has no negative influence on yarn values. A study examined various compositions of yarns made using first cut cotton waste gathered from different machines in the spinning mill. Increases in the amount of scutcher waste in the blend increased the total blowing room waste. Cleaner blends resulted, however, when the content of scutcher waste fiber was less than 60 percent. Drawing machine slivers were cleaner with smaller scutcher waste fiber content and low cleaning intensity. Lower cleaning intensities improved sliver evenness. High cleaning intensity favorably influenced yarn mechanical properties. 3 refs.
