A major problem for spinning mills that process long hemp and flax fibers is to be able to manufacture fine yarns, which are in high market demand, without a concomitant increase in the fiber breakage rate. A relatively high level of fiber uniformity is important in the production of fine yarns. The wool industry has used autolevelers to improve wool fiber uniformity for spinning and reduce the number of passes through drawing machines. Research on the use of autolevelers by the hemp and flax sector during drawing has not yielded comparably encouraging results. In particular, the drawing and doubling machines used by this sector do not appear to be compatible with autolevelers. Sliver modifications, such as condensation or doubling, may be the only feasible strategies for improving processability during spinning. 4 refs.
