Fly and fluff generation, which is common during cotton spinning, can adversely affect yarn quality. Causes of fly liberation during spinning include inadequate moisture in cotton, high levels of short fibers in mixing, the tendency of cotton to stick, and choking of suction orifices in flyframes and ring spinning machines. Fluff accumulates over clearer pads/rollers in drawing machines, roving machines, and ring spinning machines due to inferior fiber properties. Remedies for fluff accumulation include the use of infrared lamps at the creel region and drafting zone, use of floating condensers at the speedframe, treatment of top roller cots with sulfuric acid, Berkolization of the top roller cots, use of an overhead traveling cleaner at the ring spinning machine, and cleaning the drafting zone of the speedframe and ring spinning machine. 10 refs.
