Researchers investigated measures to control yarn unevenness; the effect of fiber properties and process parameters on the evenness of sliver, roving, and yarn; and the influence of yarn unevenness on fabric properties. Steps to improve yarn evenness included the selection of appropriate raw materials to ensure a low short fiber content, randomization of cards and breaker drawing cans, proper roller settings and draft at all processing stages, the presence of webs and drawframes with the appropriate size trumpet holes, optimal top roller loading, proper twist multipliers for the fly frames, and bottom aprons on the spindles. Testing machines for yarn unevenness require regular calibration to obtain reliable and reproducible results. Yarn unevenness reduces fabric quality by affecting its visual appearance, dyeability, and weight uniformity. 7 refs.
