Persistent processing problems have limited the use of nep yarns in the fine woollen and worsted sectors. Attempts to spin worsted nep yarns on a commercial scale have indicated that very fine, firm, and uniform neps must be incorporated in adequate density; nep admixture must occur on the roller card; combing processes should be eliminated; the number of drawing passes must be minimized; fiber control and drafting mechanisms must be replaced or modified; draft and rate of doubling must not be excessively high; false twist facilitates draw frame delivery; the angle of the spinning zone should be as narrow as possible; and adequate spinning twist must be inserted. Two processes for manufacturing worsted type nep yarns in counts up to Nm 36 are described.
