A thermal model of yarn during texturing with condensation heating was developed to predict yarn temperature response. The internal conduction of the yarn was found to control the increase in yarn temperature; the increase hardly varied with the surface heat transfer coefficient. Cooling due to evaporation upon threadline emergence from the high pressure steam chamber depended on the final thickness of the condensate layer, which was a function of yarn speed. Yarn speed also had a considerable effect on the rate of temperature decrease during convective cooling. Measurements of yarn temperature in the cooling zone of the experimental false twist process agreed well with predictions. 13 refs.
