Extensive weathering of cotton prior to harvest can cause it to be difficult to process. The treatment of weathered cotton with lubricants to improve processability was evaluated. These lubricants included an ester(butoxythyl stearate)and a commercial, silicon-based softener(Y-12246 Cationic Silicone Emulsion). The effect of adding colloidal silica as a frictionizer at varying levels was also assessed. Fiber processing was shown to be improved by the topical application of these lubricants. Colloidal silica was found to partially restore the loss in yarn tensile properties caused by the lubricants. 8 refs.
