Artificial intelligence was used to predict cotton yarn quality based on measurements of cotton fiber properties. These properties included strength, mean staple length, color, maturity, and trash content. The accuracy, usefulness, and reliably of the predictions can be increased by adding more properties. Cotton yarn quality can be defined by strength, elongation, twist, neps, count variation, and other properties. Assistant Professional, an expert system designed in Yugoslavia, was used to develop a model of the cotton yarn spinning process and to relate input/output data for planning and production. 15 refs.
