A sound protocol for generating, collecting, weighing, and storing of cotton dust is required to produce reliable results in byssinosis research. The primary objective of this protocol should be the acquisition of accurately weighed and contained quantities of dust that are physically, chemically, and microbiologically as similar as possible to those dusts inhaled by workers. The reliability of predictions made about textile processing dusts using existing dust generation methods are variable and uncertain. Research involving these types of predictive relationships should be carefully planned and should include specific verification experiments, when possible. 9 refs.
