Inhalation of cotton bract tannin induces acute pulmonary inflammation, which includes the release of arachlonic acid metabolites. Tannin causes the accumulation of free fatty acids from rabbit resident alveolar macrophages and inhibits their reincorporation into membrane phospholipids. After 30 minutes of stiumulation with tannin, incorporation was increased for both were pulsed with tannin for 30 minutes and then exposed to arachidonic acid incorporation could be observed within 15 minutes. The inhibition of arachidonic acid reacylation into membrane phospholipids may partially account for the inflammatory effects of tannin. 11 refs.
