Researchers attempted to improve the drawing-in operation of the automatic doffer on a covering machine. A reduction in air consumption correlated with a savings in energy consumption. Changes in supply pressures at the injector and ejector, yarn feed speeds, and working time allowed researchers to measure such forces as air drag and observe the yarn path during drawing-in. Higher pressures did not improve the performance of the injector or ejector. Fine tuning the working time of the injector or ejector did not improve drawing-in efficiency. Yarn capture at the suction entrance proved to be a critical factor in drawing-in performance. Yarn feeding via pooling was preferred over yarn feeding via rollers. The most efficient drawing-in operation required air jet velocity in the subsonic to sonic region. 9 refs.
