A study used the Advanced Fiber Information System to study nep level and nep size distribution at different stages of cotton spinning. Fewer neps per gram in carded sliver did not always correlate with fewer neps in the yarn. Carded sliver nep size was another critical factor in yarn nep levels, especially at finer yarn counts. Critical nep size at the raw material stage varied for the same count yarns from different mills depending on the raw material and yarn nep level. Nep size increased from the raw material stage through the blowroom stage and decreased through subsequent stages. Card sliver hank, feed/nip, cushion plate to half lap setting, and top comb penetration also influenced nep size in the combed material. 4 refs.
