Researchers investigated the effects of steam-relaxation treatment on the properties of acrylic/cotton yarns. An experiment subjected both ring spun and open end spun yarns to steam relaxation in skein form and subjected the skeins to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) test procedures for tensile properties, yarn diameter, and abrasion resistance. Upon steaming, acrylic-rich yarns exhibited an increase in tenacity and a decrease in breaking extension. The reduction in tenacity was greater in open end spun yarns than in ring spun yarns. Cotton-rich yarns exhibited a higher tenacity and a lower breaking extension after steaming. The optical diameter of open end spun yarns decreased following a decrease in acrylic content and an increase in twist factor. Open end spun yarns exhibited higher residual shrinkage and lower abrasion resistance than did ring spun yarns. 6 refs.
