An overview of developments in spinning techniques and machinery shown at ITMA 1999 describes fiber preparation to sliver; drawing and roving machines; and compact, vortex, and rotor spinning processes. Key developments included Barco's retrofitted fiber monitoring system that uses CCD cameras; Trutzschler's trash removal system, which is based on image processing techniques; Zinser's new roving machine that produces a yarn structure with low hairiness, increased strength, and improved levelness; Murata's vortex spinning process; and a range of automated rotor spinning machines presented by Suessen, Schlafhorst, Rieter, and Savio.
