Advances in spinning and fabric manufacturing technologies exert increased stress on cotton fibers and fuel the demand for higher quality raw materials. An overview of these technological improvements discusses ring spinning, rotor spinning, weaving, knitting, dyeing, finishing, and the changing quality requirements of end products. Spindle rotating speeds determine ring spinning productivity. Increasing spindle speeds to 25,000 rpm increases productivity by more than 67 percent. Higher spinning tensions increase yarn breakage frequencies. Experts expect rotor spinning speeds to reach 170,000 rpm within a few years. Since 1959, loom filling insertion rates have increased by factors ranging from 2.2 for projectile looms to 6.4 for air jet looms. Equations determine the tensile forces involved in ring spinning, rotor spinning, weaving, and knitting. 2 refs.
