The number of neps in unginned cotton is quite small. During ginning and preliminary cleaning, neps increase significantly and as a result, cottons delivered to the mill contain neps in the range of 100 to 1000 per gram. Kluka et al have observed that yarn neps are primarily influenced by the number of neps in the raw material, regardless of the fibre origin. This paper is based on the study conducted by SITRA to establish the relationship between the propensity of cotton to form neps and major fibre properties, to identify the size of the neps in sliver to be controlled in order to produce yarns of desired nep level, and to study the effect of some carding and combing process parameters on neps in corresponding slivers.
