Characterisation of Neps in Spinning Processes.

A study evaluated nep profiles from the raw material stage to the yarn stage and examined the effect of spinning parameters on nep size reduction for fine count and combed cotton. Critical nep size varied at the raw material stage for cotton of the same count between different mills. Nep size increased between the raw material stage and the blow room stage and decreased after the blow room stage. lower levels of neps per gram in the card or postcomb drawing sliver did not always correspond to lower levels of neps in the yarn. Card sliver hand, feed/nip, cushion plate to half lap setting, and top comb penetration significantly influenced nep size in combed cotton. 4 refs.
