Cotton yarn imperfections, such as thick places, thin places, and neps, are caused by poor quality raw materials, processing parameters, the condition of processing machinery, and mill practices and procedures. Raw material properties that influence yarn imperfections include micronaire, short fiber content, immature fiber content, and trash levels. Mill practices and procedures that cause yarn imperfections include the lack of uniform mixing, immediate reuse of rejected laps, improper lap piecing in the combing process, improper comb cleaning, accumulation of clearer waste, and diagonal feeding of the roving in the ring spinning machine. Process parameters that reduce yarn imperfections include a blow room beater to fan speed ratio of 1:1.3 for cotton, uniform top roller pressure, and proper temperatures and humidity. 3 refs.
