An overview of recent developments in yarn manufacture reveals that automation and online monitoring have improved the quality and productivity of short staple spinning. Schlafhorst's Corobox SE 11 and Rieter's AEROBOTIC technology enable production rates of 220 meters per minute at rotor speeds of 150,000 rpm. Direct spindle drive, such as HOWA's UAM Ring Frame, reduce energy consumption, noise levels, and spindle vibration. Developments in contact-free bearing location for positioning rotors, as well as the material and design of opening rollers and housing, will cement the strong position of rotor spinning. In compact spinning, the control of fibers during drafting and the use of pneumatic devices result in staple yarns with low hairiness levels. The high production rates of Murata's Vortex spinning system are offset by a significant loss of fibers during spinning. Fehrer continues to improve its friction spinning technology.
