The automation of spinning machines has become more practical. Concerns about computer failures shutting down entire machines and about the inability of service personnel to repair digital systems hampered automation in the past. Now, however, machines are divided into substations to minimize and isolate failures, "Hot Stand-By" or backup systems have been implemented, and color-graphics displays provide operators with information necessary to maintain higher quality control. Hardware and software are discussed.
