The four methods of short-staple spinning in commercial use at present are ring spinning, rotor spinning, friction spinning, and air-jet spinning. Each of the four methods is fighting for a share of the short-staple spinning market. The technical limitations of each method remain to be seen, and it is unclear whether ring-spinning can hold onto its permanent position. The technology and machinery presently being used in each of these spinning methods is described.
