Recent fashion trends favor classic rather than novelty yarns, which are being processed for 12 or even 7/8 gauge knits. A new kind of yarn, called third generation yarn, is described. The contributions of rotor, air, friction, and self-twist spinning to the development of new products is reviewed. The ability to change yarn structure and color combinations presents significant advantages.
