The operation of a spinning and twisting machine producing a shaped linen yarn is described. This yarn is composed of segments of roving attached between two threads with a low-grade linen fiber used as the base. A programmable device assures the distribution of diverse effects on the yarn, such as color and twist. The shaped yarn has a novel surface appearance and is used in the manufacture of fabric for upholstery and apparel.
