Defects in fibers are the major causes of inferior cotton yarns. Bundles of short and immature fibers contribute to the flaws in cotton yarns. Manual ginning achieves virtually defect-free cotton yarns. During processing, a distinction must be made between individual short fibers and the bunches of short fibers that cause yarn defects. Individual short fibers contribute more to the irregularity and thin areas in the yarn. A practical method of calculating the different contents of short fibers is needed.
