A review of spinning systems emphasizes both the importance of automation to decrease costs and the technical capabilities to produce diverse yarn types. Ring spinning continues to be the most universal system capable of processing most fibers in a very wide yarn count. Advantages and disadvantages of air jet, rotor, and friction spinning systems are described. Air jet spinning is best adapted to such long fibers as combed cotton in fine to medium counts, which is used to weave shirting and sheeting.
