The napping effect is achieved by mechanical methods and devices as one specific step in the process of yarn production. Raised yarns may be produced by two methods : yarn is passed between two cylinders, each covered with a layer of needles/teeth ; or between one smooth and one toothed cylinder. The speed of the passing determines the degree of raising, as does the distance between cylinders. However, the possibility of raising outside layers of fiber while yarn is being twisted exists. Models of such devices are presented, both utilizing rings as regulators of the raising. The effectiveness of both cylindrical and ring mechanisms are calculated. The method of raising while twisting can create a level of shagginess similar to yarn raising done between cylinders. 5 refs.
