The relative advantages and disadvantages of ring, air-jet, rotor, and friction spinning are discussed. Ring spinning was found to be optimal for fiber length strength and yarn count and strength properties. Air-jet spinning is best adapted for medium and long fibers, but not very fine yarn counts. Rotor and friction spinning are best suited to processing short and medium length fibers and producing coarse to medium count yarns. Friction spinning produces the weakest yarns, but their softness is attractive for knitting applications. All the spinning systems can be automated. Ring spinning operates at the lowest production speed, but its flexibility ensures continued use. 6 refs.
