The process of converting bales of fiber into sliver suitable for spinning involves opening, carding, drawing, and combing. Before the end of the twentieth century, the development of a fully automated bale-to-sliver fiber opening and preparation system is expected. There will also be significant improvements in the quality of carded yarns as a result of improvements in both opening and carding processes. Drawframe developments will continue to increase delivery speed, automate the doffing process, and refine autoleveling. An important development will be the automation of the interface between the card and the drawframe. Improvements in opening and carding will put increasing pressure on manufacturers of combers to increase automation and production speeds.
